Storage of Oilseed Crops: Specifics for Sunflower, Rapeseed, and Soybeans

Oilseed crops are one of the key agricultural categories of Ukrainian exports, so storing sunflower, rapeseed, and soybean seeds requires special attention. The correctness of post-harvest processing determines not only the product’s quality but also the oil content level, which defines the final value of the raw material.

Specifics of Oilseed Crop Storage

Post-harvest processing of seeds is very important for storing oilseed crops. After harvest, seeds require thorough cleaning, drying, and moisture stabilization. Excess moisture promotes self-heating and mold development, which can lead to loss of suitability. The optimal storage moisture for sunflower is about 7%, for rapeseed — 6-8%, for soybeans — up to 12%.

Temperature control is a key factor in the crop storage process. Temperatures rising above 25 °C promote the development of microorganisms, storage pests, and a decrease in oil quality. Therefore, elevators are equipped with ventilation systems, temperature, and humidity sensors.

Specifics of Sunflower Storage

Sunflower is a key crop in Ukraine’s agricultural sector, so it is important to ensure optimal storage conditions. The peculiarity of storing sunflower lies in its tendency to self-heat due to its high oil content. As temperature rises due to intensive respiration and active microbial development, sunflower seeds become moldy and turn rancid.

Mandatory measures include:

  • determining seed moisture using moisture meters;
  • maintaining a temperature not exceeding 10 °C;
  • regulating the pile height — it should not exceed 3-3.5 meters.

Also, the technology of sunflower silaging recommends using a controlled atmosphere with an oxygen content of 1%, carbon dioxide — 2%, the rest — nitrogen. This allows reducing the intensity of hydrolytic processes and storing the crop longer.

Specifics of Rapeseed Storage

Rapeseed requires tightly sealed storage facilities because its small seeds easily spill and absorb moisture. For this raw material, it is recommended to allocate separate elevators for oilseed crops — this enables ensuring crop purity and high grain quality. During cleaning, care should be taken to minimize seed damage.

Rapeseed grain is considered dry if moisture does not exceed 8%, but in practice, this indicator is usually reduced to 7% to ensure more reliable storage of this crop.

Ventilation in the storage and control of the raw material’s temperature are important. Even if a batch is completely dry, it is important that the grain storage temperature is below 5 °C. Using such agrotechnologies allows storing rapeseed without spoilage for 2-3 years.

If self-heating begins due to grain respiration, it is recommended to subject the top layer to active ventilation with atmospheric air; mixing can also help.

Specifics of Soybean Storage

Soybeans require constant moisture control — even a slight increase can lead to spoilage. Soybean grain is characterized by high hygroscopicity; it can absorb moisture from the environment very quickly and in significant amounts. Therefore, ensuring optimal storage conditions for oilseed beans is so important.

Soybeans can only be stored at a moisture content not exceeding 10-12%. It is worth considering the actual moisture level, not just the initial moisture.

If planning long-term soybean storage, it is worth ensuring conditions such as an equilibrium moisture level of 10.8%, relative ambient air humidity of 60%, and a temperature of 21 °C.

What Should Grain Storage Facilities Be Like?

For long-term storage, farmers use metal or polymer silos equipped with active ventilation systems, as well as hermetic bags. These technologies help preserve the nutritional properties of seeds, avoid losses, and ensure batch stability for further processing.

Effective silaging of oilseed crops is a combination of technological quality control, quality infrastructure, and operational agri-monitoring. Adhering to standards helps Ukrainian agribusiness minimize crop losses, preserve product quality, and increase profitability during the processing or export season.

When it comes to oilseed crops, Ukraine is one of the world’s major exporters; this product is in considerable demand among foreign buyers. Ukrainian agricultural enterprises, with the help of the first agri-marketplace Glendeal, can profitably sell crops abroad. All transactions on Glendeal are absolutely secure due to the mandatory user verification system. At every stage of deal-making, from logistics to the farmer receiving payment, the platform will provide necessary support.
